PARRIS Law Firm Secures $ 1.8 Billion With Sempra Energy And SoCalGas For Aliso Canyon Gas Leak

LOS ANGELES, September 30, 2021 / PRNewswire / – The law firm PARRIS, in collaboration with Panish, Shea & Boyle and lawyers for the plaintiffs, announced a $ 1.8 billion settlement with Sempra Energy and SoCalGas concerning the eruption of the Aliso Canyon gas well in Porters Ranch which released nearly 100,000 tonnes of methane and other toxins into the atmosphere over a period of nearly 4 months.

The settlement covers more than 35,000 complainants who have been affected by the October 2015 switch off. It is the largest natural gas leak in US history. This settlement is also considered the most important settlement in a natural gas discharge case.

This settlement comes after years of legal victories by the law firm PARRIS and its co-advisers, in particular $ 5.7 million in discovery sanctions against the law firm that represented Sempra Energy. Combined with other settlements and resettlement costs that Sempra was forced to pay, the victory totals much more $ 2 billion.

An independent root cause analysis report, conducted by Blade Energy Partners in consultation with the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) and the Department of Conservation’s Division of Oil, Gas, and Geothermal Resources (DOGGR) found that SoCalGas does not had done nothing to investigate the causes of the dozens of pre-installation leaks caused by corroded pipes and other safety failures. Blade also discovered that Sempra / SoCalGas had not assessed the disaster potential of the wells and that the well in question should have been plugged earlier. The leak was not finally stopped until Feb. 11, 2016, 118 days after its discovery.

“It’s a long journey for all of us, especially for the residents, homeowners and first responders who were present during the gas leak, which was completely preventable,” said attorney R. Rex parris. “This regulation should go a long way in helping everyone pay for the various health problems that have arisen as a result of this disaster.”

The settlement involves three different agreements, the first of which will require approximately 97% of plaintiffs to participate, as well as court approval of the award process and other conditions. The second and third phases of the agreement will also require court approval.

“These types of environmental tragedies ravage communities, damage the planet and cause serious health problems for residents,” said lawyer for the law firm PARRIS. Patricia olivier. “Sempra has been held accountable and every public service California and the rest of the county was warned that these types of disasters would not go unnoticed or unpunished. “

The settlement was reached after nearly six years of intense litigation led by a coordinated team of plaintiff lawyers, including R. Rex parris and Patricia K. Oliver the Parris law firm; Brian J. Panish and Jesse creed by Panish Shea & Boyle LLP; Robin greenwald and Devin Bolton by Weitz & Luxenberg PC; Raymond Boucher and Catherine kim de Boucher srl; Franck Pitre, Gary Praglin and Kelly weil of Cotchett, Pitre & McCarthy LLP; Michael kelly and Lindsey bayman of Kirtland & Packard LLP; Mariana McConnell and Paul Kiesel of Kiesel Law LLP; Frank petosa by Morgan & Morgan; and Roland tellis and Evan zucker by Baron & Budd, CP.
