Olson and Aslesen to be sworn in as members, Culhane expected to be clerk at Mitchell Board of Education meeting – Mitchell Republic


MITCHELL – The Mitchell Board of Education will appoint two board members at its next regular meeting on Monday, July 11.

The swearing-in process for current board member and board chair Deb Olson and new board member Terry Aslesen will take place, along with several other agenda items that will encompass the reorganization of the board for the 2022 school year. -23.

Both Olson and Aslesen won three-year terms on the council in school board elections in June, where they emerged from a field of six candidates to claim the seats. Olson will return to his current position on the board and Aslesen will take the position vacated by Kevin Kenkel, who elected not to seek re-election for another term.

The two will join Shawn Ruml, Brittni Flood and Matt Christiansen on the local five-member board.

The board will also elect a new chair and vice-chair at the meeting. Olson is currently president and Kenkel is vice president. Steve Culhane, district business manager, is also expected to be sworn in as council clerk.

Among other annual affairs, the board will conduct the designation of an official publisher, legal counsel, and repositories for the district, as well as the approval of membership in South Dakota Associated School Boards.

The school board should consider the following staff movements:

  • The new classified hires of Maghan Puetz, administrative assistant/attendance secretary at Mitchell Middle School, $15 per hour at 8 hours per day, effective August 3; Grisly Escriba Valsaquez, food service chef at LB Williams Elementary School, $15 an hour at 5.5 hours a day, starting Aug. 8; Larry Gromer, maintenance, $17 per hour at 8 hours per day, beginning July 12 and Hailey Robbins, paraeducator at LB Williams Elementary School, $14.25 per hour at 7 hours per day, at from August 15.
  • The resignation of maintenance worker Rick Hornaman, effective July 15.
  • New Mitchell Technical College hires Ashley Alarcon, X-ray technology instructor, $57,600; Noah Brinkman, wind turbine technology instructor, $61,900; James Bultje, Information Systems Technology Instructor, $54,000; Heather Koth, accounting/business management instructor, $54,918 and Amber Krcil, radiological technology instructor, $57,600. All hires are effective August 1.

Also at the meeting, the board should:

  • Consider approving the resolution allocating earned interest.
  • Listen to reports and comments from board members.
  • Listen to the superintendent’s report.
  • Listen to audience feedback.
