MERRILLVILLE — The board of directors of Lakeshore Public Media met at Gamba in Merrillville on Oct. 26 to honor one of its longtime members, Larry G. Evans, for his service to the station. Evans resigned from the board in December 2020 and the following month the Lakeshore board granted him emeritus status on the board, but an in-person celebration had to be postponed due to the pandemic.

Fellow board member Calvin Bellamy said: “When I think of Larry Evans, I think of the Rock of Gibraltar, solid as a rock and still there. I am thinking of Chief Justice John Marshall.

Evans is a partner in the law firm Hoeppner, Wagner and Evans in Valparaiso/Merrillville. His legal practice focuses on labor and employment law and complex commercial litigation. Evans was recognized by Best Lawyers with “Lawyer of the Year” in various fields from 2013 to 2016 and again in 2020 and 2022, and was named one of the “Best Lawyers in America”.

Evans served on Lakeshore’s board of directors for 30 years and even hosted a local talk show during the resort’s early years. During his many years of service, he guided Lakeshore as Chairman of the Board as well as in many other leadership positions, and he was also instrumental in the acquisition of the radio station that would become Lakeshore Public Radio.

“It has been so rewarding to have sat on the board for all these many years and to have seen first hand the growth of the fledgling 56 chain in the 90s from one chain to what is now at both Lakeshore PBS and Lakeshore Public Radio,” Evans said. . “All of this tremendous growth has been made possible by the generous support of our community.”

As a board member emeritus, Evans will remain on the board’s slate to be commissioned if necessary. Evans’ legacy continues with his son Eric who now serves on Lakeshore’s Board of Directors.

“Despite the many changes in technology during his 30 years of service on the board, one thing has remained constant – the need for communication with the community from local sources, which is provided daily by Lakeshore PBS and Lakeshore Public Radio,” Evans said.
