WILLISTON, ND (KUMV) – The interim executive director of the Williston Parks and Recreation District has now been hired for the position.
In a unanimous vote on Tuesday, the park’s board elected Joe Barsh as the official executive director. Barsh had been in the role since March, following the resignation of former executive director Darrin Krueger.
Park President Kelly Heller said there were seven candidates for the position, who were narrowed down to two finalists by a committee. Four out of five committee members voted in favor of Barsh.
Barsh has over eight years of experience in the district and is excited to continue his work.
“There are so many people in this community who need health and wellness. It needs a way to unwind and that’s what we’re here for. We are here to serve the community in any way we can,” Barsh said. “A lot of crazy, crazy things are happening in the community, and I’m so excited to be a part of it. Very excited.”
Financial hardship from the pandemic and low oil prices have hit the district hard in 2020. Barsh added that making sure the district is fiscally responsible is his number one priority.
“We have measures in place with staff and our operations that hold us financially accountable when it comes to paying our bills or making big projects or decisions… You have specific groups to whom talk,” Barsh said.
Barsh will soon begin salary negotiations with Vice President John Liffrig.
