Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) Joins Wisconsin Music Educators Association (WMEA) in Recognizing Milwaukee Board Member Marva herndon as the recipient of the 2021 WMEA School Board Distinguished Member Award. Each year, the WMEA recognizes a school board member who advocates for the importance of music as part of a comprehensive education.

Principal Herndon has served on the School Board since 2019 as District # 1 representative. A graduate of MPS West Division (now Milwaukee High School of the Arts), she is well known in the Wisconsin educational community for her research and staunch commitment to public education, challenging the policies that funded and cutting services to public schools and demanding the public schools that all children deserve.

“We are delighted to honor Director Herndon for her work and advocacy in public education,” said MPS Superintendent Dr. Keith P. Posley. “She is a champion of public schools and recognizes the positive impact they have on our youth in Milwaukee, particularly through music education. Principal Herndon deserves more than this recognition and the District applauds her continued support of Milwaukee Public Schools.

This year’s winners will be highlighted as part of 2021 Wisconsin State Music Conference at the President’s Welcome Reception from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Wednesday, October 27 at the Monona Terrace Convention Center in Madison, Wisconsin.
